Working on getting settled into the new neighborhood, trying to stay in it, with it, for it and above it all at once. Looking like a rough job so far ;-)

Solo hike last weekend. Somehow stumbled on this weird and wonderful improvised outdoor church, as well as the one trail in Southern California where I could hike for hours without running into another human.

We can ride on. Even without tires. 've been too complicit in the violent repression of black, brown, indigenous, and queer people, especially women. As a profoundly privileged white male, my guilt isn't helping anyone. But my actions can. And our actions will. lack lives matter.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is just follow the curves that come at you. In cycling and in life. Stay loose, stay low, keep your eyes on the exit, and easy on the brakes.

This is how I get home from the emergency department. It's where I take my N95 mask off. Once I touch my mask, I peel off my outer gloves, and use the pair beneath to take off the bandages from my nose so my N95 mask won't wear down the skin. This car is where I can show my face, and maybe roll down the windows. It's where I store masks and goggles so I can reuse them. And snacks for after work because I'm usually hungry. And thirsty, really thirsty. o one else has been in it for months. Sometimes I throw my bike in the back and go somewhere pretty to ride on my own. Besides email, that's about all I'm doing these days. I'm grateful it gets me home safe. Some people don't have that option. But I also wish I didn't need it. That I could walk and smile and talk to my neighbors. That my work would connect me with my community. Maybe someday. For now, I've gotta hold onto my armor, but I can let my emotional guard down, and I hope we all can.

Ascending, it felt like emotion was flowing from every pedal stroke into the clouds and canyons. Drops condensed on every part of my glasses, face, hands, and bike. Descending, the city I'm just starting to call home peeked through the fog, and those drops became tears. I love being alone in the mountains, but I miss you all too. See you soon. S: shout out to the cyclist in the other direction for sending me a thumbs up -- let's keep on spreading whatever love we can.

Landscapes have a way of inviting you in, and holding you back, all at once. Big mountains always scare me a little bit, but that's always what pulls me back, wanting to feel lost amidst the hills until I can catch a glimpse of the wider world.
